What Is A Car’s GPS?

Many new cars have a GPS fitted to them, but what exactly is a GPS?

GPS stands for Global Positioning system. It is a way of tracking where something is, anywhere on the planet in any weather conditions. It functions 24 hours a day and there is no subscription fee required to use its services.

GPS works by using satellites that orbit the Earth to calculate the location of the GPS receiver. The satellites orbit the Earth in a very specific way and transmit a unique signal which allows the GPS to compute the precise location of the satellite. With the information of where the satellite is in space, the GPS system can work out where it is in correlation the location of the satellite.

When a GPS is used in a car it’s used to determine information such as location, length of routes, time travelled and estimated times of arrival.
